I have since focused on second language grammar acquisition. So my focus has been on teaching grammar patterns and irregularities to adult students.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a barely touched grammar text book that I had purchased about five years ago. I have been doing a couple of pages from the book, including the work activities, each day. It is something I enjoy a great deal and view as self improvement. I view this focus as essential to providing a higher quality education to Miss E by modeling the concept of lifelong learning.

It never ceases to amuse me, however, how fascinated I am by the grammar of the English language yet willing to abuse it at every written and spoken turn. I love the rules, but I also love how easily you can work outside them and develop your own variety of English.

My interest in linguistics and grammar has certainly translated across into my literacy teaching.
She understands the following terms: phoneme, graph, digraph, trigraph, schwa, vowel, consonant, verb, noun, adjective, sentence and question.

Home Education Family - She is so involved in the process of creating her own mini-worlds, that so long as I remain quiet, she is able to fully lose herself in play. Her understanding of the world is solidified. When she notices me, however, she becomes self-consicious and her play seems to become stilted.

From a time perspective, I don't think very many school children get much time to indulge in imaginative play. They lose the opportunity due to being time-poor, and socially it doesn't seem to be acceptable anymore. Parents are lead to believe that prescribed (and often expensive) activities are the best way to give their child more. More of everything, except time to simply wander their own imaginations. These activities have their place, but when there is no time for a child to simply ponder the universe, you have to wonder about their overall development long-term.

I live in a large city. I would never allow my daughter out of our house unaccompanied at this point in time. She doesn't have the luxury of a large backyard to get run around in. But she has a bedroom that provides a safe place for unlimited imaginative play and the option to close her door if she wants to keep the outside world away. It's not the ideal location of beautiful bush that she's confident with and the wonders of the outdoors. But it is safe, comfortable and something she can call her own, while letting her imagination run wild.

Home Education Family - It had a very big impact on her.

Upon return, Miss E has turned our lounge room into a vet and animal rescue centre. Not only are her stuffed toys treated for injuries with toilet paper bandages, but some live animals too. A dying bee was rehomed to a 1kg yoghurt tub, as was a grasshopper with one leg and some more snails. The rescued snails are kept separately from our pet snails at the moment because they haven't 'recovered' from being mistreated by that pesky downpour of rain on Tuesday night.

What has captivated me is watching Miss E interact with these animals (stuffed or otherwise). She is gentle, loving and treats them appropriately. More importantly, she understands that she's in a position of power. The animals are vulnerable to mistreatment and neglect and because humans impact on how animals live, it is our responsibility to provide them with appropriate care.

She has always been meticulous about providing our cat, Muishka, with her food and water, but now understands why it's her responsibility.

The Slack Blogger

I've been slack about blogging the last few weeks. Mostly because I've been busy doing and busy thinking about a great deal of things. Miss E has had several extra medical appointments, I've had several choral performances and I'm just feeling a little low on energy in general.

Because I prioritise being able to put the energy into actively home-educating Miss E, I have a tendency to progressively cut back more and more on my online time, personal reading and socialising. I am painfully aware that I have a finite amount of energy that I can give out to others so I guard that quite earnestly. It has also made me reflect on the difference between responsibility and obligation.

Sometimes it can be so difficult to differentiate between them. When you're feeling overwhelmed, things are piling up and you look at everything you need to do and feel like you can't drop anything. I've found that in generally I have a much more positive emotional response to something I am responsible for. I feel that I have an element of control and there isn't that insidious pressure that obligation brings. Obligation breeds resentment, resistance and procrastination. I've been actively trying to change my thought patterns on things I feel obligated to do, to things I feel responsible for. There have been varying degrees of success.

So on that note, I'm going to finish a couple of things I'm responsible for before we head off to the hospital for the day.

It boils down to having a little faith

This is an unusual moment in homeschooling for me. I'm feeling a wee bit incompetent and like a failure. And here's the silly part, I'm feeling insecure because I don't really stress about homeschooling. I find the education component quite easy. I'm not at all insecure about my ability to provide a high quality, well-rounded education for Miss E. I know my strengths as an educator, I know my weaknesses and I know when to get in external assistance. I don't at all doubt that Miss E will be extremely well educated for however long she is homeschooled.

But here's the thing, most parents do have those doubts, and quite frequently it appears. They worry, plan and pour hours into researching their child's education. I read blogs and forums about how other people homeschool and plan their homeschooling and I come away feeling like I'm a lazy and disinterested homeschooling mother. I keep wondering if I've missed something. Like a huge component of homeschooling has been overlooked by me because I'm not stressed by the education aspect at all. I have this suspicion that I shouldn't find it this easy.

I'm not pretending that homeschooling Miss E is easy. It's not the educating element that's difficult, but Miss E herself. Miss E is a 'spirited' child on a good day and an utter nightmare on a bad. The polite terms are stong-willed, eccentric, determined, forthright, extremely energetic and emotionally demonstrative. This is a child who has the energy to walk a minimum of 3km on the day she has a bone marrow transfusion.

So, now that I've written about it, it really does just boil down to having a little faith in my skills as an educator to spot the gaps and know that I'm certainly providing the education Miss E needs. And if I find that element easy, that's okay.

Home Education Family - But a true and proper God.

Gravity takes the form of a happy, smiling man with brown-skin, wearing a brown cap, purple shirt, blue trousers and green shoes. And he is real to her. The words, "Oh Gravity did that", come out of her mouth frequently. I understand her perspective. This unseeable force makes things drop to the ground, no matter what anyone else does. She can drop things to see how Gravity works and experiment, but the force is always there. She's seen videos of what happens in zero-gravity and that just reinforced her belief that Gravity is a God.

Yesterday, we saw some cracked birds eggs on the ground. They had dead baby birds in them. Emmie was upset that the birds had died, but she said, "Gravity made them land on the ground. That's what Gravity does".

I'm assuming she'll forget about, or move on from focusing on Gravity at some point soon, but it's curious to see the way she's processing the existence of an unchanging force. It's also fun to see her move from belief to science, which is where I think this will go.

Home Education Family - My apologies for a rather disjointed post, but I am pressed for time.

Miss E is half-Australian and half-Japanese. The ethics, and to a lesser extent, morals of both cultures are quite different. As a family, we have essentially cherry picked the ones we believe are most suited to us. Knowledge of the Ethics applicable to each culture allows her to understand and participate in both cultures more easily.

All schools have a set of Ethics - socially acceptable behaviour that is expected of students. The more hurtful behaviour within the socially expected range at schools is often deemed as other, or outside of the school's ethics, but if you look closer (and with your head maybe tilted just slightly), it becomes obvious that the negative behaviours sit within the area of ethics as well. How many times have we heard, "They're just kids", as a means to justify unethical behaviour that has now become the norm?

There are a few things in the general Ethics of Australian society that I simply disagree with. I don't agree that alcohol is an essential component to a celebration/good time. I don't agree that everyone deserves a fair go, but people of Caucasian descent are more entitled to that fair go. I don't agree that the gap in life quality between our Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples is 'just one of those things'. I definitely don't want my children subscribing to those Ethics.

We have definite ideas about how we view the world. We try to include valuing the arts, respecting public space, cultural acceptance (not tolerance, but genuine respect), avoiding blind consumerism and treading with respect on the Earth in our teaching. Daily life, books and television all offer great Ethics teaching opportunities and we are able to educate our daughter in so many ways by home educating her.

Home Education Family - Miss E is full of surprises, if nothing else.

Her outburst yesterday took a huge toll on our whole family, but was still an emotionally healthy response to an exceptionally stressful situation. I don't think an Adult would get through the situation without a few extreme emotional outbursts at times, either. After this experience, I understand why home or distance education is an essential part of the overall well being of children undergoing this treatment.

This is a difficult element of parenting Miss E, and while it gives credence to our approach to home education her it doesn't make things any easier.

Stepping back

I'm originally a classroom teacher, and I'm classroom teaching on weekends at a private language school.
One thing I'm becoming conscious of, is an apparently habitual need to hear the sound of my own voice at regular intervals.

Miss E has been happily engrossed in an activity for about 20 minutes, and I've done a 'check-in' six times. I know she's fine, she's 2 metres away from me. I'm interfering with her concentration out of the habitual drive to direct what she's doing. She's happy. She's learning. She understands what she needs to do and she's focused. I know that I need to take a step back, but switching that classroom teacher behaviour off is considerably more difficult.

This is going to take practice and patience on my behalf. But self-awareness leads to change.

Another slow day

Today was a slow day. We were all recovering from a very busy weekend and sleep deprivation paid us all a visit.

Even with a headache, Mrs R still enjoyed home educating Miss E. In fact I was very grateful for it, as I could sleep in. Miss E was tired, stroppy and just wanted to paint, draw and watch TV. Normally I would say no to any more than 30 minutes of TV, but I had things to do, was running low on patience, had a headache and basically, needed the babysitter. When added to another set activity, it sits firmly in the TOO MUCH basket for Miss E and Mrs R.

Today we're meeting a group of home educated families at our local park. I'm extremely excited, but nervous about how Miss E will respond, as she also has treatment this afternoon.

I will update soon to show how it's gone.

EDIT: Miss E just couldn't cope with more socialisation today. She just wanted to be at home. Considering she's probably only been at home for a sum total of 3 hours other than sleeping for the last 3 days, I'm not really surprised. Off to the hospital in half an hour.

Home Education Family - We now hold that responsibility for Miss E, and I (Mrs R) must admit, I'm enjoying the process (thus far).

I'm enjoying the flexibility and it surprises me to say, the lack of responsibility and obligation. I know that statement probably makes little sense, so I will try to explain.

We work to our own timetable, our own rhythms, sleep patterns, eating patterns, moods and whims.
There is overall structure, I know where we're going academically, but there is absolutely not rush.
No school bell, uniforms, homework, notes, ironing, pre-packed lunchboxes, peer pressure or need to please anyone but ourselves. When peak hour trains are cancelled or I don't feel like checking my email for 24 hours there is no obligation or worry.

I have been given a sense of genuinely unexpected freedom. I've always felt bogged down and bored by being a stay at home parent. Some people are fabulous at it, I'm not. I am, however, a good educator. I was very fearful that I would be cranky, cross, irritable and feel weighed down and overwhelmed by the responsibility of teaching my daughter while unable to do paid work. I have felt quite the opposite. Dynamic, vibrant and competent. I don't feel so imposed upon by frequent requests to build farms, set up paints or read the same story for the eighth time on that particular day, because not only is educating Miss E my job, but I genuinely have the time to take life at a pace I'm comfortable with. What has surprised me most of all, is how much slower that pace is than I expected.

Home Educating Miss E is not only making me a better educator but I also feel like I'm becoming a better parent.

Home Education Family - She can add up to 20 with ease. She can subtract from numbers 10 and under with ease.

But today, we discovered she can't count to 20.

We have no idea how this happened, but she genuinely can't understand the numbers from 11-17 when counting, but is confident with 18, 19, 20. She can look at a group of 7 and a group of 8 and say 15 within a second, but she can't count. She gets consistently stuck with 14, 15 and 16. When she reads the numbers from 1-20, she can identify each one correctly and she can write the numbers from 1-50. If she has 10 of an object and she can add items to it to make a requested number without second thought.

But she can't count!

We've been using a variety of manipulatives to practice counting. It seems so odd that the most basic of skills has not been solidly acquired, but she's able to use numbers at an extremely high level of a child who's just turned 5.

We're still very baffled by this.

History Encyclopedia

We picked up a great book very cheaply ($15) today.

It's The Illustrated History Encyclopedia: Everday Life In The Ancient World published by Hermes House

It is fantastic for teaching Ancient History. We're able to read in snippets, it's small enough to throw in my handbag as on-train reading. The sections are small enough that Miss E is able to really remember and understand the points made.
